We are so excited for Saturday.
The Blackhawk Christmas Market has come together easily, and honestly, the planning has been a lot of fun. If things continue to move in the same direction, Saturday is going to be awesome.
When finalizing plans for Saturday, we realized that we hadn't given a "sneak peek" into the raffle items . Yikes! Our vendors have arranged for generous donations, and you won't want to miss out on the opportunity to win these items.

Flu Shot Clinic
As members of the PTA, we are constantly searching for programs that reflect and enhance the National PTA's mission statement. One part of our mission is to focus on programs that promote and enhance the health and safety of students and their communities.
With that goal in mind, we are excited to announce that on Saturday, December 1, we will be hosting an on-site flu shot clinic with CVS. Yipee!
CVS will be at the Blackhawk Christmas Market from 0900-1300 to administer flu shots to those who are 14 years of age or older. While we would like to offer flu shots to everyone, CVS has a policy which does not allow them to administer flu shots to those who are younger than 14.
All you need to bring to the clinic is your insurance card/Military ID, and for most individuals, your flu shot will be fully covered! For those who have an insurance plan which doesn't participate with CVS, the cost of the shot is $31.99.
Ready for some more good news? Everyone who receives a flu shot will also receive a 20% off Shopping Coupon for CVS! Perfect for the new store which is set to open in January!
And if flu shots and coupons aren't enough to get you excited, Krisy Kreme donuts are being presold tomorrow and Wednesday! Be sure to send your money and order form with your student tomorrow, and we will collect them during lunch. More information and an order form can be found in the next post.
Hope to see you on Saturday. It's going to be a great day!

Donuts Are Coming!
On December 1, the PTA is hosting the Blackhawk Christmas Market, and during our planning, it was mentioned that we may want to offer something in the way of concessions. The idea of offering donuts and coffee was tossed out, and the Board Members jumped on the idea.
Then we started to think. "If anyone loves donuts half as much as we do, don't you think they'd like to buy more than one? Two? Even three? Maybe Four?!? How can we make this happen at a reasonable cost?"
We got in touch with Krispy Kreme, and we're excited to say that donuts are coming to the Blackhawk Christmas Market!
If you're interested in ordering donuts or coffee for "take out", here is the scoop.
Cost: $6.00 for a dozen glazed donuts
$8.00 for a dozen of one of the following: chocolate iced glazed, glazed creme filled, lemon filled or raspberry filled.
$9.00 for a bag of coffee.
Payment: Please pay with cash or a check made out to Shughart Middle School PTA. We will collect money and order forms next Tuesday and Wednesday during lunch.
Pick-Up: December 1 9-1 during the Blackhawk Christmas Market. Whatever is not picked up by the end of the Market will be donated, resold, etc.
If you have any questions please feel free to get in touch with us. Thank you!

We would love for you join us as we set goals and make plans on how to best utilize these profits. We meet the second Thursday of the month at 9:00 in a conference room located in the SMS office.

Starting this week, we are asking students to collect Box Tops, Campbell’s Labels for Education, Tyson A+, and Coke Rewards. On December 13, the PTA will gather the labels and tops, and on December 18, the homeroom with the greatest number of items will receive breakfast courtesy of the PTA. Theme Search For Reflections Program
The National PTA has a amazing program which highlights the arts, Reflections. In addition to highlighting the arts, this program fosters stronger partnerships within the school community, something which is very important to the National PTA.
The National PTA Reflections program encourages students to explore the arts and express themselves by giving positive recognition for their artistic efforts. Since it was founded in 1969 by Mary Lou Anderson, millions of students have benefited from this program. Students in Pre-K through grade 12 create theme-based artwork in dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography or visual arts. The 2012-2013 Reflections theme is: The Magic of a Moment.
It is the intention of the SMS PTA to welcome the complete Reflections program starting this year or the next. If you are interested in being a member of the committee that will implement this program, please let us know. We would love to have you!
While the complete program requires school involvement, the theme search does not, and we want SMS students to consider submitting a theme for next year's program. The SMS PTA wants students to " . . . fuel a future Reflections program theme by submitting innovative concepts to their State PTAs. One concept from each state is considered and National PTA announces the selected theme the following Spring. The Magic of a Moment was developed by Kate Eldredge, a student from Braun Station Elementary PTA in San Antonio, Texas. Download the Theme Search Form and view a list of previously selected themes."

Red Ribbon Week
This week SMS will participate in Red Ribbon Week. The National Family Partnership is the sponsor of the National Red Ribbon Week Celebration. The NFP is helping citizens across the state come together to keep children, families and communities safe, healthy and drug-free, through parent training, networking and sponsoring the National Red Ribbon Campaign.
The National Family Partnership was founded thirty years ago, and has devoted its efforts to the well-being of youth. Today, NFP is a national leader in drug prevention education & advocacy. Their mission is to lead and support our nation’s families and communities in nurturing the full potential of healthy, drug free youth.
RED RIBBON HISTORY
Enrique (Kiki) Camarena was a Drug Enforcement Administration Agent who was tortured and killed in Mexico in 1985. Camarena worked his way through college, served in the Marines and became a police officer. When he decided to join the US Drug Enforcement Administration, his mother tried to talk him out of it. "I'm only one person", he told her, "but I want to make a difference."
The DEA sent Camarena to work undercover in Mexico, investigating a major drug cartel believed to include officers in the Mexican army, police and government. On Feb. 7, 1985, the 37-year-old Camarena left his office to meet his wife for lunch. Five men appeared at the agent's side and shoved him in a car. One month later, Camarena's body was found. He had been tortured to death.
In honor of Camarena's memory and his battle against illegal drugs, friends and neighbors began to wear red badges of satin. Parents, sick of the destruction of alcohol and other drugs, had begun forming coalitions. Some of these new coalitions took Camarena as their model and embraced his belief that one person can make a difference. These coalitions also adopted the symbol of Camarena's memory, the red ribbon.
Red Ribbon Week is an ideal way for people and communities to unite and take a visible stand against substance abuse. It's also a great opportunity to show your personal commitment to a drug-free lifestyle through the symbol of the Red Ribbon.

Welcome!
September 2012
Dear Shughart Middle School Staff, Students, and Families:
The Shughart Middle School PTA welcomes you to the start of an exciting school year. The purpose of the PTA is to support the faculty, staff, parents, and most importantly, the students at SMS. We are planning a productive and exciting year, aimed at enhancing the educational environment for the entire SMS student body.
In order to have a successful PTA, we need the support and involvement of SMS families and school staff. An excellent way to show your support is to become a member of our PTA. The cost is $5.00, and will help support clubs, teacher requests, student activities, and much more. While we would love to have you volunteer and attend meetings, purchasing a membership does not commit you to do so.
By volunteering with the PTA, you are becoming a part of the positive change that improves education for all children. We understand, however, that the military lifestyle demands much from families, often making it difficult to extend involvement outside of the home. With that in mind, we have created a variety of volunteer opportunities. Time commitments vary from a few hours to a few months, and there are projects that can be completed at home as well as in the school. Just registering your MVP Food Lion Card is support that we appreciate. Whatever level of participation you select, your involvement will be appreciated and beneficial for the entire SMS community.
We especially appreciate your support through comments, questions, or concerns regarding the SMS PTA. Suggestions for future events and initiatives are welcome and encouraged. We can be easily reached through email.
The SMS PTA believes that it is extremely important to do everything we can to enhance the learning environment of our children, as they truly are our future. It will take all of us working together to ensure that this happens, and we look forward to working with you throughout the 2012-2013 school year.
Sincerely,
The Shughart Middle School PTA Board
