Jeans Days, They Are a Changin'

It was recently brought to the PTA's attention that not everyone supports our Jeans Day fundraiser. We've been given a variety of reasons, and we are concerned that what is supposed to be a fun event is becoming more of a headache than anything else. With these issues in mind, the PTA has made changes to our Jeans Day fundraiser.

A little background on Jeans Day. . . . This event is great in that it brings in $175-$250 a month without needing mega volunteer manpower. For a variety of reasons, the PTA voted not to do a door to door fundraiser this year, and we believed that Jeans Day was an substitution that parents and students would prefer.

Where does the Jeans Day money go? Right back to the school! We have $1200 budgeted for "Mini Gifts", and Jeans Days help to fund this program.  Mini Gifts are requests from SMS teachers. As of this time, we have provided the registration fee for the Math Counts Competition and the Piedmont NHD district competition. We have provided student financial aid for field trips. We are paying for the publication of the first SMS literary magazine, which will showcase in color students' artwork, stories, and poems.

The PTA will be providing snacks during the week of Tera Nova testing. Last year the PTA provided snacks for one day. This year, our goal is to provide snacks for the entire week. We will also provide support for Month of the Military Child, and we will host an appreciation event for SMS staff and the PTA volunteers.

We would like to purchase benches and tables for the front of the school. Eating outside is a great reward for students, and the SMS staff would like to provide this opportunity.

Your support is very appreciated and is very needed.

After tossing around ideas, the PTA is making changes that will hopefully raise support for Jeans Day. First, we are changing the name to Support Your School Day as this paints a better picture as to the purpose of purchasing a wristband. Second, we will share what that month's support will be used for.

So what do you think? Will these changes effect how you view Jeans Day? If you haven't supported this fundraiser in the past, are you more likely to do so now? If not, we'd love to know why.

Thank you!
